Comfort Zone

Comfort Zone

What is a comfort zone?  What is your comfort zone?

I hear this term quite a bit–“You need to step out of your comfort zone!”  For me my “comfort zone” could be quietly sitting at home working on the computer, rehearsing pieces for a performance or spending time with family.

I suppose many people can relate to this and in a way become very complacent.  Happily content with the way things are.

However, in order to achieve any type of accomplishments we must step out of that complacency and push ourselves beyond our normal bounds.  In that way we expand our comfort zone.

I often think back to when I was learning how to ride a motorcycle.  It seems for my entire childhood I dearly wanted to ride.  When I was about 19 I finally took the rider safety course at the local community college and put my leg over a motorcycle as a driver for the very first time.  This turned out to be a very nerve wracking experience for me.  I stalled the engine numerous times, I came very close to laying the bike down as I was coming to stops and often felt like I was going to run off the road.

I ended up passing both the riding and written parts of the course, but I was certainly not the trophy boy of confidence when it came to riding.

Over the months and years I grew in confidence.  I went from cursing at myself when I stalled the bike in my younger years to chuckling as these such events occurred as I have grown older.

Creating an online business for many of us is moving way out of our comfort zone.  Being online seems very glamorous and appealing until we actually have to do something!!!  Practice talking in front of a camera.  Practice writing a paragraph as a blogger.  Just practice doing something you don’t usually do or have never done before.

Grow your comfort zone so that when things don’t go exactly as planned(and they usually don’t) you can chuckle, maybe even roll your eyes at yourself and then continue on.

All the best,

Joel
